This section is in a simple lecture style, and looks at music from a purely mathematical angle, in a theoretical tradition that goes back, through the works of Renaissance theoreticians, to the Ancient Greeks.


You’ll either find the style charming or off-putting. Whilst I have certain sympathies for the “reactionary” spirit in which ‘Gradus cux Parnassum’ was written, I must judge it for what it is. The present translation by Alfred Mann is therefore the first faithful rendering in English from the original Latin and presents the essence of Fux’s teachings.

It goes through Species for 1 voice, and proceeds with developments of johanb to 4 voices. An incredible book that has survived the test of time. However, analyzing the figures and trying to do them on your own reveals even more about the practice than is put into words in the dialogue. It can either be used as a study or as a reference guide; there are many exercises throughout that the reader can have a go at. It may not be the best “total beginner” guide at least not for mebut it is fascinating to take a glimpse of 17th and 18th century music pedagogy, not to mention the perspective Fux gives through the dialogue of the student and teacher.
