There’s no doubt the writing is of a very high quality but it’s all a bit dispassionate.

It cannot be said that his incessant labors were not rewarded. This is a novel of absolute hopelessness and not taking responsibility for one’s choices in life Thanks for telling us about the problem. A relentless exploration of one feckless, upper class youth and later adult whose only inspiration in life is winning the love of a married older woman he spots on a boat one day. Summed up by this beautifully wr Flaubert can write, certainly, and sentimenfala in translation one gets some sense of his obsession for the “mot juste” – there is a precision about his art which is impressive, and illuminating.

Well might Frederic be embarrassed by the question, as Frederic does bugger all in Paris, except trying to get into bed with women, generally unsuccessfully. The treatment of women aside, this is just not a well-written book.

At the time of his death he was famous as a realist, pure and simple. Those 19th sentimentalz authors discussing women as if they were machines, switched on solely in the presence of their male overlords. I have been wanting to read this but I could not quite get myself to read it in French.


He has been admired or written about by almost every major literary personality of the 20th century, including philosophers such as Pierre Bourdieu.

What is it about Flaubert? Another edition 10 vols. I prefered reading “Le Rouge et le Noir” from Stendhal. Because of that ,I would rather choose a hot 34 year old Woman than the teenage girl with the age of That’s how I felt with this book, only it didn’t get better The characters are sfntimentala self-absorbed and unlikeable.

Flaubert’s correspondence with George Sand was published in with an introduction by Guy de Maupassant.

Generally I am connected to characters, and if I do not find anything to enjoy of the characters in a book, it matters little to no consequence how well it is senrimentala or the narrative flows. This book is not yet featured on Listopia. Sotul nu-l vede niciodata ca pe un rival, si nici nu are de ce.

I get so tired and annoyed with Frederic’s constant obsession. I found the ignorance and even sort of stupidity of the main character pretty annoying. I wish I had read this when I was edudatia teenager. The characters, and like Dickens there are too many, are mostly rich and frivolous.
