This book ruins this trope like a fat kid stretching out your hammock by view spoiler [instead of having the heroine getting hurt after a loving relationship has been established having the heroine try and kill herself epically in a justifiable fit of maidenly hysteria in order to escape the escalatingly obsessive, unwanted sexual pursuit by the hero to become his mistress after being imprisoned at his home for weeks.

With more skilled writing this book might have worked- needed a more subtle way of showing Adrian’s conflicting characters of light and darkness.
