After interviewing people over three years, Philippe Auclair is able to give us a broad picture and well as a detailed narrative. However, Philippe Auclair shows excellent balance throughout this meticulously documented archive of Cantona’s life regel up to his ‘death’ in – and combines it with marvellous, free-flowing prose that makes the book an absolutely delightful read, despite the amount of dry detail it contains. Still, that’s only a small problem as the accounts of all the other seasons are excellent.

Achievements and controversies are reported equally – and vitally, with the context that sensationalist English reports often omitted.

Well, definitive doesn’t even begin to describe this book. But that passage serves as a useful marker for the book as a whole – it’s a short passage which doesn’t do more than raise an extremely interesting critical question, Auclair is unable to get any answers.

Whether or not you approve of Cantona’s on-field antics, or admire his post-football artistic activities, he remains a fascinating character, and one well-served by this hefty but consistently interesting portrait.
